Game Changer Review

"Stop signs had always been blue, and I was crazy for thinking otherwise."

This line was what got me hooked on Neal Shusterman's latest work, Game Changer. An abridged version of the plot (no spoilers!) is that the main character, Ash, has the universe literally revolving around him. This means that when he takes a massive hit during a football game, the universe begins to shift and spin around him. So, when he wakes up, everything seems... The same, and yet different. Stop signs are blue. He's part of a wealthy family, and drives a BMW. But not everything is good...

Neal Shusterman is one of my favorite authors. In fact, there has never been a book of his that I didn't enjoy thoroughly. So, when I saw this on the new shelf at the library, I was very excited. I read most of it in just one day, and couldn't put it down. From every new turn as he tried to get his reality back to what it was, and avoid problems in his new reality. One of the most interesting parts was how even though everyone from his old reality existed, many of them are seldom seen in his new one for various reasons. As he tries to find old friends, the world is built up around him.

It's also interesting that some people have vague recollections of the past, depending on how close they were to Ash in his original reality. Some of them are even fully aware at points in the book. However, their awareness is only that something has changed, and they don't know what. It's fascinating to see how the characters act in the new world.

In conclusion, if you want a fun story without too much controversy and a read that goes all too quickly, this is a great story! It has very likeable characters, and an interesting plot that hasn't been explored much before.

9/10.

  1. Hola David

I think this book ties into the concept of how people used to think Earth was the center of the universe. It's interesting that the author narrowed this concept down to a single person, and I agree that I haven't seen that done before. I'm definitely interested to see how the author shows different people's memories, and it's intriguing that everyone is based on the main character. Maybe I'll read this book soon!

  2. This book sounds really interesting, especially since the general plot seems really unique. I had always heard of the phrase "center of the universe" but never considered how it could actually apply to a story. The way you described how memories are affected by the main character is very interesting. I also love Neal Shusterman's books, but this one is especially intriguing!

  4. Neal Shusterman is a wild card for me. Sometimes his books are exceptional, other times, I'll be left feeling unsatisfied. I've never heard of this book before, but I'm pretty intrigued, since I've been looking for books to read. Also, the plot here looks to be unique and full of surprises, and as a plus, the MC's name is Ash. Pokemon fans gotta get on this. The alternate reality aspect of this novel sounds especially interesting to me, and I've always found these types of stories to be fun to read. Anyway, I like the ideas in this novel, and I'm definitely going to consider giving this one a read.

  5. From reading shusterman's unwind series, I would also say he is one of my favourite authors. I have never read game changer, but it sounds like a fascinating concept. I am really curious on how Shusterman will explore this concept, and how it affects the plot. Neal Shusterman is quite good at fleshing out interesting concepts, so I will definitely check this book out.
